Career tips from the founder of WHO KNOWS GINNY

Hi, I’m Ginny and I’m the founder of WHO KNOWS GINNY. My network is quite extensive, and by sharing mine, hopefully others like you can profit by getting from A to B faster.

As I’ve been in the job industry for over twelve years as an entrepreneur and working multiple different jobs in the creative industry, I gathered so many tips and tricks, I want you to know you can land that job interview and get hired.

YOU’RE JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE

Since the years have passed I’ve seen a lot of job applications and quite frankly? The majority of them all look the same. Why? Because people tend to write a cover letter that mirrors the job requirements. I can tell you now; there are better, more authentic ways to stand out.

Example: if a job requires someone to be flexible and/or being able to manage a team, people often write in their cover letter that, indeed, they are flexible and/or have experience managing a team. Now, that’s a good thing, because it meets the criteria. But, the elaboration remains absent and there is a lack of authenticity. Now, thats where you can win them over and stand out from the crowd. After all, you want to get noticed and you’re not like anybody else, right? Right!

BE THE PERSON WORTH KNOWING

So how can you persuade a potential new employer to crave an interview with you?

It’s actually quite simple: By telling them what makes you different and not assuming they will automatically know. Who are you and what do they gain by hiring you. The secret to getting their attention is in sparking their curiosity.

If an employer asks for certain requirements and experience, which aligns with your skills and meets their expectations, tell them how you implemented those requirements in your previous job experience and how it turned out. You want a company to imagine about how you will benefit them and you can accomplish that by spitting facts. Telling your story is what sets you apart from all the others who applied. You’re not the same as all the others, so know and name your USPs.

After all, that is what makes you authentic!

UPSELL YOURSELF

Don’t forget to look at possibilities within the new company where you can help them develop even more. What I mean by that? Well, I once applied for a job at a book publisher. Even though I had no experience in that job field and they were exactly looking for that, I managed to come up with new ideas for the company and I impromptu incorporated those ideas in my cover letter. Do you want to know what happened?

I surprised them with my fresh point of view and initiative. By doing so, I sparked their curiosity and made them want to know more about me. I not only landed an interview with the Director, I was also hired as a freelance Consulting Editor. This was in 2019 and I work with the publisher until this day. Together with talented authors, we published best selling books and all I know is this wouldn’t have happened, if I didn’t set myself apart in my application back then.

WHAT NOW?

Apply for that job, make yourself really stand out by being authentic and curiosity will follow. I believe in you!

Love,

Ginny
