CREATE YOUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES
Kimberley Wenas - freelance stylist and communications professional

Could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about what you do?
My name is Kimberley, and I work across two different but surprisingly connected worlds. I’m a freelance stylist, working on fashion and creative projects, and alongside that I work in communications at MIND Us, an organization focused on the mental health of young people in the Netherlands.
Creativity has always been an important part of who I am. Whether I’m creating a look for someone or working on a campaign that needs to connect with young people, I love taking an idea or a feeling and turning it into something people can actually see, feel, or relate to.
Growing up, did you always imagine yourself working in the creative industry?
Yes, I think I always knew in some way. Fashion was a big part of my life growing up, especially because of my grandmother Nini. She always looked beautiful and put together, wearing beautiful earrings and jewelry. I remember being fascinated by those little details and the way she expressed herself through what she wore.
My mother also loved fashion and was always well dressed, so I grew up surrounded by women who showed me that personal style was about much more than just clothes. Looking back, I think my grandmother Nini especially had a big influence on my love for fashion and the creative path I eventually chose.
How did you get your start as a stylist?
I started by creating my own opportunities, reaching out to artists and creatives to organize shoots where I would take care of the styling. Some of my first projects were with Winne, Valerio Zeno, Christina Curry and Kim Feenstra. Alongside a PR internship in Amsterdam, those experiences helped me build my portfolio and network. Eventually, I went on to style Kim Feenstra for two seasons of Holland’s Next Top Model, which was a really special full-circle moment for me.
What does a typical styling project look like from the first idea to the final result?
I start by researching the concept and mood, then build the visual direction and source the right pieces through shops, brands and showrooms. I style mostly by feeling and intuition, and there’s always some last-minute problem-solving involved. It’s a real team effort with the photographer, make-up artist and creative team, and I love seeing everything come together in the end.
What's been one of your favorite styling projects or clients you've worked with, and why?
Styling Yellow Claw has definitely been one of my favorite projects. Wearing the same outfit on stage is part of their signature look, so I love finding pieces that work for both of them while still feeling fresh and right for each show. It’s always a fun creative challenge.
If someone wanted to become a stylist today, what would you tell them to focus on first?
Develop your own eye, but also learn how the industry actually works. Styling is so much more than having good taste or putting together nice outfits. You need to understand people, build relationships, communicate well and be reliable. I’d also tell them not to wait until everything is perfect. Start creating. Assist people, work on small projects, build a portfolio and use what you have around you. Your network will grow as you grow. And be kind. The creative industry can feel very image-driven, but people remember how you made them feel and what it was like to work with you.
Alongside styling, you also work in communications at MIND Us. What drew you to that role?
At first they might seem like two completely different worlds, but for me they’re actually connected through storytelling and people.
At MIND Us, I get to use creativity for something that has a social purpose: improving the mental health of young people and encouraging conversations around how they’re really doing. I work on communications, campaigns, content and collaborations, so there’s still a very creative element to my role. What I really value is being able to combine creativity with impact. Styling allows me to express myself creatively in one way, while my work at MIND Us gives me the opportunity to use communication and creativity to contribute to something bigger.
What's the best creative advice you've ever received?
Trust your own instinct. It’s easy to compare yourself to others, but your own perspective is what makes your work unique. Be inspired, but always stay true to what feels right to you.
Is there a creative habit or routine that helps you when you feel stuck?
Working out is a routine I always make time for because it keeps me physically and mentally balanced. My friends inspire me a lot too through their cool individual styles, our conversations, different perspectives and especially their humor. I also find inspiration in music, reading books and everyday life.
If you could style any person in the world, past or present, who would it be?
Definitely Bruno Mars. He has such a strong sense of style and isn’t afraid to play with fashion. I’d love to bring my own perspective to his already iconic look.
