WHY DID 'WORK-LIFE BALANCE' BECOME A SELLING POINT?
The meaning of a 'good job' has changed and having a life outside of work is now part of the conversation.

It’s not just about what you do
A good job isn't only about salary, title or career progression. How much control you have over your time, how manageable your workload feels and whether you can switch off after work all shape how you experience your job. The EU increasingly treats these things as part of job quality, rather than something extra.
COV*D changed the way we work
The pandemic forced millions of Europeans to work remotely, proving that at least some jobs could be done differently. And even though remote work has declined since the peak of the pandemic, it hasn't disappeared. In 2024, around 44% of EU respondents in teleworkable jobs were working in a hybrid arrangement, combining working from home with working at the workplace. The office didn't disappear. But the idea that everyone has to be there every day changed.
Flexibility started to mean something different
Working from home showed people that flexibility isn't necessarily about working less. It can mean avoiding a long commute, being able to pick up your kids, taking your laptop somewhere else for the day, or simply having more control over when and where you work. The expectation changed: work should fit into your life - not completely dictate it.
Does the workday actually end?
Working from anywhere can also mean feeling like you're always available. That's why the conversation has moved beyond “Can I work from home?” It's also about boundaries, workload, time off and actually being able to disconnect. The EU has even introduced rules around flexible working and the right to disconnect, reflecting how seriously these issues are now being taken.
So… is “work-life balance” really a benefit?
The data suggest that workers increasingly care about working hours, manageable workloads, flexibility and the ability to maintain a life outside work.
Maybe the interesting question isn't: “Does this company offer work-life balance?”
It's: “What does work-life balance actually look like here?”
